reflection.
barry toranto...
Barry Toranto is a photographer who uses reflection of windows and creates photographs that are so colorful and have a lot going on at the same time in the photograph. They look Photoshop but they are not, they are taken at such an angle that they appeared layered but they are simply merged with whatever is on the other side of the glass. I find all of his photos have a big depth of field as everything in the picture is focused and the focus point if not in one specific place, this gives the viewer the freedom of looking at the picture as a whole. I would really like to try and recreate his style but it will be tricky to get the angle right.
I really like this picture because of the effect the reflection in the droplets. The focus point of the picture is what’s going on outside the picture as it’s a busy city and even on a rainy day people will not just stay at home. The picture has a medium depth of field as everything is the photograph is in focus except for the droplets on the window. I also like how the bright lights of the buildings reflect on the droplets giving the picture a lot of colour. I would really like to recreate this picture using strong lights and water.
lee friedlander...
Lee Friedlander is an American photographer who captures reflection beautifully. He uses mirrors, windows, fences, signs and car mirrors to capture an image and uses reflection to his advantage. Most of his pictures are in black and white which shows that they were taken before color pictures were invented and the themes are usually around the 1960s - 70s. I really like how he uses reflection as its almost a trick to the eye because you look at the picture and then realize there is the reflection in it. I really like his work and want to try and work in the style of him as he is one of inspirations.
I really like this picture as it uses the reflection in the car mirror really effectively, you can see another car through the reflection and the mountains in the background. The picture also has another car in the sky which is held up by a pole. As you can see 3 cars in the picture (on the photographer is in, the reflection in the car mirror and in the air) it make the viewer look twice at the photograph and notice all of them.I also like how the picture is in black and white as it gives the effect of it being old. I think the idea of it was a road trip and how road trips are very relaxed as you go with the flow and most decisions are impulsive, this make the viewer much more relaxed when they are looking at the photograph. The focus point of the picture isn’t a specific spot which allows the viewer to look at all aspects of the picture. The picture has a large depth of field which also allows the view to look at the picture as a whole. I really want to recreate this picture as I really like the use of the car mirror.
The picture on the left is a picture that I have taken in my own car. My inspiration was Lee Friedlander but I took the picture with my own twist on it by not making it black and white as I really like the colour of the sunset in the reflection and the red traffic light on the top. This symbolises the restriction of moving as you are not allowed to drive through a red traffic light. I also really like the colour of the clear blue sky and how it slowly diffuse into a greyish white colour. This was another reason why I did not turn the picture black and white as I love all the colours in my picture and got the amazing shot by using the photographer as my inspiration.
mirror MIRROR in the snow who's the fairest of them all?
This is one of my best photos from the shoot, this is because the reflection of the sky on the mirror almost blends in with the snow. I do feel that I can improve by placing the mirror at a different angle or taking the picture on a different day when the sky is blue so it comes in contrast with the snow very well. I would also like to get rid of the grass in the snow and just have white snow. I feel like I want to use different mirrors instead of the small rectangular ones as I feel that if there is a bigger surface area I can capture more of the moment in the reflection. As photography is all about capturing the perfect moment.
growing through the mirror...
stupidity.
I really do not like this picture as it is too dark, this is because the aperture is not on zero. The focus point is on the droplets on the mirror instead or the actual reflection so it does not capture any part of the reflection. The picture also has the thumb of me holding it, this makes the picture look very unprofessional and it is a clear mistake.
genius...
I really like this picture as I think it captures reflection very well. I put the mirror on the ground and angled the camera so the tree could reflect off the mirror. I really like how the tree it reflected off the mirror which makes it look unusual and the focus point is on the reflection of the mirror so it captures the tree. The picture has a medium depth of field as the rocks on the ground are not in focus, this makes the viewer look directly at the reflection rather than paying any attention to the rocks on the ground.
triangle DIMENSIONS...
GENIUS...
I really like this picture as the mirror reflects the sky but it is placed on the grass. This makes the picture unusual as the colour of the sky comes in contrast with the green grass. The picture has a high depth of field so everything is in focus and the focus point is on the mirror with the reflection of the sky on it.
I really like this picture and the idea of taking this picture came to me when I was cleaning the mirror and I saw the reflection of the water on it. The focus point of the picture is on the point where the water makes contact with the glass, the reflection is colourful as the background of the paintings above reflected on the mirror. The picture also has a high depth of field as everything is in focus and I epically like the patter of the droplets of the water which is created o the mirror.
DANIEL KUKLA...
Daniel Kukla is a photographer who uses reflection to show contrast in environments. He uses an easel and places a mirror on it and uses it to reflect anything else other that the background in the reflection. It looks very simple but it is very tricky to get the right angle so the mirror is reflecting something completely different that the background. I also like the idea of taking the mirror anywhere and using it in any setting. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to use an easel in my photographs.
I really like this picture because of the contrast in colours in the reflection compared to the background. The background is of dark rocks and trees but the reflection in the mirror is of a sunset in which the shadow of the mountain is created. The dark colours go in great contrast with the light colours of the sunset. I also really like how simple it looks but it has required great skill as you need to get the angle of the mirror just right and the angle of the camera right too in order to take the amazing picture. I wanted to use the easel in my photography shoots as well but instead of a landscape I wanted to use a person.
painting to the future...
stupidity...
I feel like this is one of my weakest photos as it is under exposed. This makes the picture very dark and the light in the room is not shown in the picture. This also makes the picture look very dull and nowhere as near vibrant. There is also streak marks on the mirror to where Chloe’s face is. This makes the picture look very unprofessional and unrealistic. In the reflection you can see her looking at the camera this makes it look unrealistic as when a person in painting they would concentrate on the paint and what they want to draw rather than who is taking a photograph of them.
genius...
I really like this picture as I feel it shows a painter but with the use of reflection. I had the idea when I saw a stand and the mirror on its own and wanted to create this image of a painter. The aperture is correct making the picture neither over nor under exposed. The focus point of the picture is on the reflection of the mirror and it had a medium depth of field making things in the background look blurred. There is a broken chair in the background and a sign and a bag, this makes the room look messy creating the effect of putting priorities first and clearly the priority of painting is higher than clearing up the room. I really like the style of using a big mirror and using the reflection of a person on it.
editing...
I wanted to edit using Photoshop on the picture to make the reflection a bit different than usual.
I really like this after the edits as the reflection is not the usual as the reflection is pink. I used Photoshop to archive this picture by changing the reflection and the reflection only and I wanted a colour that would stand out to the viewer. It is an unusual reflection and it is my own interpretation of it by changing it. I still wanted the paintbrush to be in contact with the mirror to make it look like she is painting her reflection but not in normal colours.
naoya hatakeyama...
Naoya Hatakeyama is a Japanese photographer who takes pictures using reflection. He uses the reflection of water and the lights of buildings to create amazing pictures full of color. He also takes pictures of droplets on windows which shows the reflection of anything outside of it. He focuses on the droplets on the windows instead of focusing on what is outside which has a very powerful effect on the viewer. I love his work because they are so vibrant and it catches the eye this is why I think his work is great and unique. I would also like to try an recreate some of his photographs as I really enjoy his style.
This has to be one of my favorite pictures ever. I love how much color is in the picture which make it so vibrant and eye capturing. The focus point of the picture is on the droplets and not on the background, this captures the reflection of the lights on the droplets. I think it shows the rush of people going to work or school on a rainy day as the lights look like cars rushing and the droplets represent the rain. As most of the picture is dark it really makes the yellow light stand out as they are total opposite colors on the color wheel. The picture has a medium depth of field so the droplets towards the edge of the picture are not in focus, this makes the viewer’s attention go even more on the light and the droplets reflecting it. I would love to replicate this picture as I like how vibrant it is and the pop of color is so eye catching.
working in the style of NAOYA HATAKEYAMA.
The picture on the left is a picture that I have taken and the picture on the right is Naoya Hatakeyama's. I really like this picture as the light outside the window reflects on the droplets showing reflection really well. The focus point in the picture is where the light hits the window and each individual droplets reflect it. The picture has a medium depth of field as not everything is in focus. I got this idea from an artist and wanted to work in the style of them and for that I found the perfect window which had droplets on them and a bright yellow light on the other side, but the light is not in the center and mine is a portrait picture where as my inspiration is in landscape.
rivers...
stupidity...
I feel like this is one of my worst pictures as it is blurred. This is because the focus point was not on any of the reflection and I didn’t wait long enough for the camera to get in focus. It also has a part of a wellington boot on the left side of the picture which is not meant to be there which makes the picture look a lot unprofessional. Reflection is also not captured well.
genius...
I really like this picture as it captures reflection very well in the waves and the rocks on it. The reflection was of the sun in the sky and it was captured at the peak of a river in Cumbria called the river Eea. The focus point was on all of the picture so everything is in focus which gives the viewer the freedom of looking at any part of the picture they like. I got the idea of it when the river was meandering and the tiniest bit of sunshine came through the sky and I wanted to capture the moment as any good photographer would.
bubbles, bubbles ,EVERYWHERE!
stupidity...
I feel like this is one of my weakest shoots as the bubble is not in focus at all making there to be no reflection in the bubble. I was moving while taking the picture as I was trying to follow the bubble with the camera but it didn’t work as I couldn’t have any of it in focus. Nothing was captured in the picture except a bit of colour in the bubble but even so it was very little.
genius...
I really like these two pictures as the colours of the background if reflecting on the bubble creating luminous greens and pinks on the bubbles. The focus point is on the bubble and the depth of field is very small making everything in the background blurred as it is out of focus. It captures reflection very well as it is reflecting the building in it and I want to do more shoots like that for my final peace by using the reflection of bubbles to my advantage. I found capturing the reflection on a bubble exceptionally hard as it is moving with the wind which makes it harder to focus on the bubbles reflection.
final peace...
INSPIRATION...
I really like these photos of the broken mirror and scenery in the background. I want to use the same concept in my own photos.
FLOWERS...
paint...
First I had to paint my canvas to make it look like the sky. I used acrylic paint and mixed dark blue, normal blue and white to create the effect of the sky. I wanted the left side of the canvas to be lighter than the right. At first I did streaks and it didn’t blend too well so I had to use a sponge to blend in the colours so it looked more realistic to the sky.
edit...
I edited the pictures using Photoshop, I wanted to make some pictures darker and some brighter than others also make some colours stand out more than others. I used adjustments to increase the brightness and also increased the contrast in some. I needed to add colour to some pictures for example I had to colour is some petals as they did not stand out enough and they blended into the sky too much. I edited the pictures so the ones that are light would show early life and happiness as we link bright colours to good memories and made some pictures dark to show sadness and old age.
final...
For my final piece I made an installation. The whole process was done in ten hours and my theme was reflection. My final peace shows life and how as you grow you reflect upon on your decisions as you grow and become wiser with time as it is said that mistakes are the pillars of success. The other side shows that as you get old, your body is decaying and it is preparing itself for the inevitable death. The whole concept was done by having a mirror and taking pictures of almost "happy" pictures in it which represents life and growth. The other side was done by having a broken mirror to show death and pictures of darker flowers taken in the reflection so show the body decaying. The frames were made by twigs taken off a tree and were made to make the smaller pictures stand out. The darker and lighter sky was to show the days going past and time running out to live. All the pictures were taken on reflections with a camera and on the same mirror. I have really enjoyed doing my final peace and all the thoughts and experiments that went in it made it an even better experience.
